Winnipeg Folk Festival 2011

It's sad that this event (which I look forward to all year) goes by so fast! Winnipeg Folk Festival gets better and better each year. Meeting new fantastic positive people, inspiring music and beautiful weather, can't ask for a better event eh?

I have mentioned before what the Winnipeg Folk festival is but if you missed last years blog, it is a festival held at Birds Hill Park which is about a 25 min drive away from Winnipeg. It includes variety of folk artists from around the world as well as many local artists! I could go on and on about the details but to save some space on here please check out http://www.winnipegfolkfestival.ca/ on all the details you want to here.

This is one of my favorite times to shoot in the year, it always inspires me to be surrounded by people who are creative and entertaining. I have so much respect for the people who put there artistic skills into play to make everyones folk fest an event to remember. My good friends the Castle Boys, who plan all year to make the enormous structure that everyone looks forward to, which included the Library which you will see in the following pictures. We even had some Shakespeare come into play in the campground also known as Folksspeare. Red Tent, Trading post.. list goes on!.

Music is always a hit. My favorites were Ganga Giri, Beats Antique, Toots & the Maytals, Oh My Darling, Crooked Brothers, Jeff Tweedy .. so many to name.

I was at the cottage last week and I was up pretty late one night and I just had to whip out my camera for this scene. Absolutely no clouds in the sky and the lake was like glass, no waves no wind, nothing. Quite the rare scene and I just had to take a photo, kinda looks like daytime as well haha. Sort of reminds me of the Twilight books to, enjoy.

Jazz For Humanity 2011

Hey hey! So you folks who are not winnipegers but are fans of the NHL, I'm sure you have heard that it was announced last tuesday that our home town is getting an NHL TEAM BACK !! Let's just say sure the whole city felt the excitement and got there party faces on that night and to celebrate my friends The Afterparty held a show at the Pyramid! Where's the Toms?

I had this great idea for an awesome panoramic picture but of course as I adventured into the forest behind my house.. the grounds ended up being flooded, boo!! So I literally sat on a stump thinking of another idea and I went back home to grab my favorite pair of shoes, my toms and take a picture of them. If you've never checked out the TOMS website, they have a section called, " How do you where your Toms?" It's set up so people who own toms can take portraits of themselves wearing there toms or another other kind of picture with there shoes and put them on the site. I think that's so neat! Because I cherish my shoes so much I wanted to do a great portrait of the shoes themselves but with a twist, to make it difficult to find in the photo. Kind of like a where's waldo except where's the toms, GET IT?! I also wanted to attempt a self portrait and turn it into a panoramic picture.. gotta love those rubber boots

I encourage everyone who has TOMS to send it a picture to the site of how you where them, you supported a great cause, why not brag about it. Cheers!!

Ahh I'm finally back on here!! Man it's been to long since I've got blogging again. Now I am committing myself to posting a photo on here every week! I will also be picking weeks where you the lovely viewers will be asked to participate to! Nothing more I love then seeing others ideas, inspirations and creativity.

When I realized I was going to do photo of the week I immediately thought of this idea cause every time I drive by and see this sign it automatically makes me smile and I have a mini excited freak out. It's cheesy but I know many people would agree me, it's one of the best times of the year. This will be 5th year at folk fest and I cannot wait to make new friends, best part is meeting new incredible people in this city and well from other parts. Also, music just plain ROCKS! For those who do not know what folk fest is about, The Winnipeg folk festival is a summer folk festival held in Birds Hill park near Winnipeg. It features a variety of folk artists from all around the world, as well as local artists to. Of course camping is where the action takes place. Every year people always bring new ideas and fun to the festival from parades full of random fun, drumming circles, fire dancing, yoga classes you name it!

I am also looking forward to my dear friends who organize the Hammock District, they design a hammock structure to save people from the sun and also who want to get a little nap in from the previous nights events. Seriously, they took to this design to Burning man, they saved many people from being burnt out from the sun. I can't thank you guys enough for putting that together. Look out for castle boys to, don't worry you will have no trouble finding them. *Hint* look for the biggest structure out there and several men in similar costumes. Question for you folks: Where would I be able to get a onesie? I'm thinking of busting out in full suit, maybe glue some glow sticks to me, what do you reckon?

Also be on the lookout for Red Tent! It is organized by the lovely Erin Vosters and it is a women-only space providing resources, workshops and a sexual assault crisis service to campers. I am so happy you never gave up on this Erin! You should be very proud and I cannot wait to help you out making this a hit.

One Adventurous Summer!

Wow, is summer over already (only like a month late realizing this!). It's been awhile since I've been on here but I'm going to get in the habit of updating more, because who doesn't love to waste time on the internet!!

So many things to say about this summer, but from the bottom my heart, it has been life changing, incredibly inspiring and overall the best I've ever had. Let me mention all the experiences I got to take on this summer ( you will be shocked I managed to do all this). At the beginning of July I got to travel with a couple of friends to Wisconsin to See Dave Matthews Band at Alpine Valley. They played 2 shows which were fantastic. I also made new friends which of course is the highlight of that trip. Also before DMB I got to make a very long drive from Winnipeg down to Montreal (friend Vanessa and I), we went a little crazy and managed to go 15 hours straight the first day. Nothing like a little clam juice and vitamin water to help you out! I stayed with her and her bf Adam for the week. Montreal is gorgeous, I highly recommend making a trip sometime out there.

Now come folk fest ( did I mention I had 2 days to get ready for this) which is my christmas, birthday all in a matter of 5 days. What can I say about Folk fest, every year just keeps getting better and better. From my dear friends the Castle boys creating fantastic props and inspiring the 1000's of campers that are there, to the music that touches our hearts. My highlights were Oka, Delhi 2 Dublin, The Swell Season, Arrested Development. If you have not attended Winnipeg Folk Festival, it is a must do, you will leave with smiles and love in your hearts!

For my final adventure, Burning Man. WOW!!!!!!!!! This is Folk fest times a billion. Burning Man is a self expressive art, music festival held in Nevada desert. I have no idea how else to describe BM but I that's all I can come up with haha. I would suggest googling it as to BM itself is hard to label down. I drove down there with 6 friends (only one of them I new) 36 hour drive. 3 hours into the drive we broke our back window! But we made it safe and sound to the festival. I have never been in conditions like this in my life. Harsh winds, dust literally gets in everything you own, but for all the harsh conditions you go through, you hardly notice it because of the 50,000 participants that come and make your festival the best it can be. You live in a city for 9 days and by the last day, everything is gone, not a trace of any living thing! If you would like to, please visit the BM site and find out for yourself just how inspiring this festival can be!

After being cooped up in the house for the past week and a half from a sprained ankle, I had a big mission to get out and get some sunset pics. I crossed my fingers for no rain (didn't get any yay!) and I was lucky enough to get some incredible/interesting clouds in the sky! I got called back by the WHS (Winnipeg Humane Society) to do some more B&W portraits of there animals for one of their exhibits. I have to say though this experience was much harder then last time, emotionally. It was not easy walking away from the building with no animal to take home. My last shoot at the WHS was back in April when I was shooting for my final project for school.

I had a wonderful time cuddling/playing with all the animals, best part of it was I encountered dogs that were nearly my size.. so I had to be a little cautious of the camera gear in this process haha. My photos will be displayed at the centre fairly soon, you should check them out. In the mean time, here are my friends!

Here is a collection I made from my trip to Squamish BC where my sister lived during the summer. Oh and home for the week was a soccer mom van (which Marin and Jai live in). Turns out they made the very back of it a kitchen. Hiya guys! Boy it's been awhile since I posted something on here, graduation from prairieview and now SUMMER TIME. Of course the best part of summer is what I call home is the Winnipeg Folk Festival. This event I look forward to all year, coming together with friends and being surrounded by incredible spirits. It's where we get away from reality and spend a week together enjoying beautiful music and beautiful people. It's always emotional leaving this place because I always come back with new friends and other friendships become even stronger. I highly recommended anyone who has not visited the festival to do so because it for sure leave a mark in your life. Enjoy viewing my favorites from the festival.

So to avoid depression because of the weather, I found it's time I start playing around more in lightroom since we recently learned some other cool techniques. I agree very much with KB there to, I heart presets. Who doesn't love something that saves you time in the future?!?! Alright! Here we go with my little opinions/thoughts on my movies I chose to see AND will start off with...

1. I Am Cuba

I am still a little confused about what the movie was trying to say/represent. From what I got, it was trying to show little bits of pieces of Cuba's "children's" lives. What I mean by that is throughout the movie the narrater, who is actually suppose to be the land actually speaking, talked about the people and would refer them as "my children." I'm still trying to analyze the movie, but I am still extremely confused. How the movie was constructed visually though was impressive considering how old it is. My favorite part was the filming in the bar, I thought it was clever and creative. Overall confusing but appealing

2. One hour Photo

All that runs in my head is CREPPY! I have not been disturbed so much by a movie in a long time haha and it takes a lot to since I am a huge movie nerd. Robin Williams plays a great crazy/emotionally unstable man. Throughout the whole movie I could feel his loneliness and his lust to share the love that the family had that he admired. I must say though I thought the way the photos were presented on the wall was really neat and eye catching, even though it was incredibly beyond weird. I also enjoyed when Robin Williams was explaining all the different types of people that came in to get there photos developed (insurance guy, old lady with cats). I thought that was hilarious. It makes you stop and think what those people that work at photo labs, must meet a lot of different characters. I was especially creeped out when Robin Williams was dreaming that he was in Savmart and his eyes were spitting out blood. I am still extremely confused about that part, but it was neat how they shot it. One hour photo, creepy but it has it's entertaining moments.

3. Pecker

Loved! I absolutely adored the humor in this movie. How peckers family was totally out of control and each one had this intense lively character. There were so many characters and I loved watching Pecker take pictures of all these different personalities. The film had me intrigued the whole time. I especially loved how Pecker said, " art is all around, you just have to look and see." Something about that quote has inspired me, maybe for me not to be so focused on one thing and to loosen up a bit. Could be the answer to why I miss those shots that truly make an impact. This film also states Fame is not always the answer. Sometimes if you just stick to your original inspiration, that will lead you to pure happiness and I believe that is what Pecker has stood for. A great feel good movie with tons of inspiration

So I started to beginning the challenging portrait assignment our good old Art Director From Hell gave us on taking 2 head shots each of 2 people we know well and 2 people we don't know so well. I decided to start off with the people I know well. This is my good friend Megan who I work at Boston Pizza with. We had a lot of fun driving around winnipeg trying to find the best spots with gorgeous lighting. The shoot went great I found and put all my focus to the subject. Already I'm seeing a difference in my shooting by doing that. Here's the best of from the 1st portrait shoot.

Meet Hippie Number 2!

So after a long period of steady traveling and rock climbing around the world, my sister Marin has finally come back to the peg to finish her Environmental Science degree at U of M since she only has a semester to finish before she gets it. She left for New Zealand about 3 years ago and decided to make herself a home in the rainforest, yes my sister lived in house, in a tree to prevent companies from cutting down trees (which actually worked!). She then fell in love with rock climbing and also a kiwi boy who she has been traveling the world with her still today. Last summer I visited her in Squeamish BC and did my fair share of rock climbing to, great sport by the way to let off some steam. I then stayed in there little house they rented out which they shared with a couple of people. There living room happen to be outside and my sleeping area was the laundry room, quite comfortable actually. So now I am adjusting to having a sibling in the house again which couldn't be better since she is my best friend and has been my biggest inspiration. I've never met another woman with so much wisdom and strength and just let's go to follow her dreams. That is why I admire her. So here is a little collection I did of my sis doing what she/I love, YOGA!

A little taste of backyard safari

After a long and hardworking shooting week, things have started to already pick up. I'm for sure feeling the pressure, but at the same time I am starting to feel more and more at home at Prairieview. Friendships are starting to build and everyone is getting to know each others own unique photography taste. Also, some of us were in the making of doing some destruction to our potato's from our creative imaging assignment on pretty much how to create emotion in a photograph without using any other objects and to let us explore further into using lighting. I think myself and my classmates can agree we have love and hate relationships with our potato's and I thought I was the only one who so wanted to let go, but you somewhat still had some bond to it which made it even harder to toss it into the red river... or perhaps eat it (which I eventually did). I also got to photograph what I love most for our Industry Studies assignment backyard safari. We were to photograph animals at the zoo, which at first doesn't seem like a challenge. It does not help when the animals are sleeping, but eventually they were up and adam doing there daily duties. I am still exploring what exactly is my kind of photography and what subjects I truly enjoy. I am still working on tieing my extreme love for animals/photography. One thing that brought out an emotional side was me was actually seeing/capturing the animals expressions and movements. It felt almost like I knew what they were thinking, but also drawing me to know more. This made my experience even more memorable because if I can feel this unique connection, I can use this to my advantage into my photographing. Well enough about that! IS3 Photo Genre or Technique

Looking over the number of photography techniques, I am very interested to learn more about nighttime photography.

Researching the history of nighttime photography, the first photographers to actually produce large bodies of work at night were Brassai and Bill Brandt. . In 1932, Brassai published Paris de Nuit, a book of black-and-white photographs of the streets of Paris at night. During World War II, British photographer Brandt took advantage of the black-out conditions to photograph the streets of London by moonlight.

By the 1990s, British-born photographer Michael Kenna had established himself as the most commercially successful night photographer. His black-and-white landscapes were most often set between dusk and dawn in locations that included San Francisco, Japan, France, and England. Some of his most memorable projects depict the Ford Motor Company's Rogue River plant, the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station in northern England, and many of the Nazi concentration camps scattered across Germany, France, Belgium, Poland and Austria.

One thing I curious to learn more about is digital noise (which means when our exposures become to long. Most new digitals have this build in and it has names like luminance control and dark frame subtraction. Dark frame subtraction entails the camera immediately recording a second exposure after the first, but without opening the shutter. The noise is then removed leaving a clean night shot. Needless to say, keeping track of your exposure is crucial. My sites below gives step-by-step method to creating a nice clean nighttime photo.

1. I go crazy for these types of photos and wonder how they do it. They always remind me of the museum of man and nature and just going there to see the Auditorium.The abstract and intense usage of interesting exposure have held a soft childhood memory.

2.Who doesn't love a big old rusty car being brought back to life? At first when I looked at this, I admire the photographers decision to make the car the focus point while drawing the viewers eye to the street lights! Great lighting! Wonderful rule of thirds.

3. Again another starry night fetish. I like how this photo also has an abstract cicrular motion, It Creates fabulouis series of lines/implied lines. Also the glare off the houses makes great contrast to the sky.

I found this assignment to be quite fun because lines are everywhere, you just have to open your creative mind. During this,I figured out you could take pictures of pretty much anything that had a continued story to it. Challenges were just trying to to make the framing work for the picture so it would have a good lead. Overall, a fun new experience to help me see better!

The Story of Lindsay and the journey to Photography

I think by the end of this week I'm going to have the answer to this question perfected ha ha. My journey to becoming interested in photography was from travelling . To be honest, I think I have always been interested since I was young. I always thought I had a problem because I would look at one National Geographic book for 3 hours just looking at the photos (yes what kind of child actually reads books). I would also watch Discovery Channel often just to watch animals and how they survived on this world. I started travelling when I ended up going on a Europe trip with my high school for 14 days. I think that's when digital camera's became a huge thing and I started experimenting there and I absolutely loved it, I just wished memory cards were a lot bigger then so I didn't have to decided between two good photo's ha ha. When I came back from my trip, I was given many positive feed backs plus reviewing them made realize how passionate I was about my photo's looking back and remembering how different/beautiful the world was in that moment. So I ended up going to Australia in 2006 for 3 months by myself to experience more of the world. It has taken awhile but as cheesy as it may sound, I found something that truly makes me strive for more.

The techniques I'm hoping to learn by the end of the year is more technical stuff. I am very new to my SLR and I have been experimenting with it a little and I'm already getting the hang of it, but does need improvement. I would truly love to learn my actual style of photography because really I just love to shoot anything that looks free and out of the ordinary. Overall, to be the best I can be.

Q. Have you ever had a brush with greatness? Meeting someone famous)

Surprisingly, I have met someone famous. I ended up going to Australia Zoo in Brisbane and I was on my way to check out some elephants. Next thing I know, Steve Irwin (also known as the Crocodile Hunter) rode up to me on his little bike and started having a conversation with me. Now obviously I'm like speechless because I totally love the guy and he's asking me questions of where I'm from , how long I have been in the oz and how much he loves Canada and Polar bears. I was very happy to meet him because he passed away the next week.

Hello Mates!

I'm quite new to this whole blog thing so bare with me. I must say it's quite exciting to be starting this course with so many other people who all share a common passion for photography. To let you know about my style I'm pretty much an all out hippie. I absolutely love the outdoors/landscapes and anything that's out of the ordinary. I have a huge love for animals so when I get a chance I like to get out in the wilderness.. which living in Winnipeg that doesn't happen very often. I do enjoy taking portraits every now and then. I've started to take a liking to black and white photo's to after recently using my SLR camera for the second time ever. That pretty much raps it up. I look forward to getting to know all of you and seeing your work and goofing off when we can! Cheers!!
